Now that I’ve written a post on refined versus unrefined salt, I wanted to share with you how I use fine and kosher Real Salt in my kitchen.
Summer vegetables are in full swing which makes this a great time to learn about the differences in grain sizes of Real Salt to best use them in your dishes.
The different grain sizes in salt can add dimension and texture to your food. Incredibly, even baked goods.
What I enjoy about Real Salt is that although the texture is different in their variety of sea salts, it all has the same nutritional value.
Fine Salt
Fine salt has a fine texture and what you would normally find on a dining table.
It’s what we are all accustomed to and is used in cooking and baking. When a recipe calls for salt, it’s referring to fine salt.
It’s my preferred salt for fermenting (natural pickling) vegetables and baking since it dissolves quickly and incorporates itself well into mixed batters or dough.
I also use fine salt for making room temperature or cold condiments such as mayonnaise.
A tip to remember is that whenever you want your salt to incorporate quickly and you don’t want a bite to it, use fine salt.
Kosher Salt
Kosher salt is a large granule, coarse salt. This is the salt that my family in Spain has taught me to keep in my kitchen at all times.
I adore kosher salt as it adds a wonderful texture to many different foods and can be used in cooking as well.
When I’m cooking in the kitchen, whether I’m making a sauce, sauteing, or braising – I use course salt since it’s a breeze to grab a pinch and use it without over salting the food. I use it to my taste and then set out my fine shaker salt on the dining room table where people can add extra salt to their liking.
What I especially enjoy about kosher salt is using it for its texture that it creates.
There are many vegetable dishes I’ll make where I top them off with a sprinkle of kosher salt. It adds a delightful crunch and splash of flavor.
Tomatoes and Cucumbers in a Vinaigrette
Even our green salads taste great tossed in a simple vinaigrette made of extra virgin olive oil and vinegar sprinkled with kosher salt.
This is definitely the salt of choice for anyone that loves to cook.
A Real Salt Grain Size Comparison
The makers of Real Salt put together a great video showing you the differences in grain sizes.
It’s easy to see the benefits of having both fine and kosher salt in your pantry especially when it comes to finishing off your summer vegetable dishes.

For anyone who has loved Lowry’s Seasoned Salt but wants to get away from it since they do actually put MSG in it, switch to Simply Organic – All Seasons Salt. It’s great! I have used Real Salt – fine in the past, but moved on to Celtic Sea Salt by Selina Natural but then I came across Real Salt – Kosher and fell in love! I guess that means we buy 4 salts total. Simply Organic – All Seasons Salt, Celtic Sea Salt – Fine, Celtic Sea Salt – Course for our salt mill for the table and Real Salt Kosher. I guess, we kind of like salt!
Diana Bauman says
I like salt, to ;D
