Faith and Family Urban Homesteading

My Big Fat Dog Boaz!

I’ve been feeling a real yearning lately to draw nearer to God. I’ve been so consumed lately with the excitement of spring and all the chores that come with it that I get wrapped up in my own little world forgetting what’s truly important. For the past month, I’ve been reading the book of Isaiah. For some reason, today I felt the Lord leading me somewhere else. Wow, what do you know, I read 1 John. Obviously, God was trying to tell me something and I am so grateful for Him. He reassured me that I am a child of God and yet he also showed me that …

Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.
1 John 5:21.

Okay, Less focus on all my hobbies and more focus on you. I just love how God works!

I ended up having a great day with my mom and boys. The boys were able to play outside most of the day. As soon as I finished my client work we all walked to the garden, watered our plots, and the boys had a hay day playing in the water. My mom and dad stayed for chorizo tacos and rice. After dinner, Gabe took Nehemiah to sk8board at Skate South. I stayed home with Ezekiel and we went on a 2-mile walk with my big fat dog, Boaz.

My poor baby boy Boaz. I love him soo much. He’s a beautiful long haired German Shepherd Dog. After the birth of Ezekiel, our German Shepherds, Zoe and Boaz, became outdoor dogs. Our home was just too small to contain humans and canines under one roof. Over the winter he got fat. I really don’t know how it happened but he did. So, I’ve committed myself (and Gabe, hahaha) to walk our fat dog every day until he sheds those extra pounds. Feel free to keep us accountable. I’ll do a blog on before and after pictures and track his weight as it goes down. If anyone has any suggestions on maybe changing food or what I can make him, feel free to share.

After our walk, I gave Zekie a bath and put him to bed. I then cleaned out the chicken coop. My chickens are looking great. When Gabe got home with Nehemiah, my baby boy explained to me everything he did at Skate South and gleamed in his excitement. It’s amazing hearing his thoughts and emotions.

That was pretty much my day 🙂 I just wanted to share how great my day went and give God the glory for everything he has created for us on this Earth.

Some Pictures of our Day
Nehemiah and Xavier kept running up and down the main garden path and then started playing with the water hoses. They had soo much fun!
My boys, Nehemiah and Ezekiel
My chickens are getting so big. It’s so fun to watch them develop as their feathers and combs are coming in. I currently have 3 chickens as one of my Wyandottes ended up being a Cockerel (Rooster). Des Moines Feed and Nursery took him back and have ordered me 2 more Wyandottes that I will receive on May 1st. I’ll have a total of 5 hens 🙂

Wow! just connected your real name to your Blog name! I know, I'm really slow! I've read your blog for a while, and see your tweets, so the name connection is great!

Keep walking him, & both of you will be healthier.

    Yeah Chickens!!

Love the picture of you and Boaz. So cute :o) You can keep walking him all you want, but if you want to keep the weight completely off even during the winter….RAW dog food. That’s how dogs were orginally created to eat. We give my dog, Lina, raw food and bones that she likes to chew on. She looks great!

Raw dog food, tell me more, I’m interested. Check this out. Remember that Nutro dog food …

I got this today and about cried! I was feeding this to my dogs for 5 years! Seriously, Gabe and I just switched their dog food a few months ago. It makes me so sad because we would catch Zoe and Boaz vomitting every once in awhile and Zoe frequently had diarrhea. It’s all making sense now! We were poisoning our dogs!! We just figured they had gotten into something! I’m really upset about this!

    Go to http://www.barfworld.com/ and http://www.rawlearning.com/

You’ll need to do your research on what would work best for you and your dogs. Pick through the information… there is so much out there!

I changed Roxey and Lily over to raw food after I read and understood exactly what they put in dog foods. Gross me out… why would I let my dog eat something that I would not even eat?! Remember the email I send you a while back about what is in the dog food? It was a silly “talk show” between Dog Kibble and Mr. Carrot. I remember what your response was :o)

Anyway, go on NOAH and type in”dog food” or “raw dog food” in the search engine and you’ll get a lot of good information. Teresa is pretty funny and such a backwoods woman… I love her! LOL!

Oh, I don’t know what kind of vet you go to, but there are two natural/holistic vets in the Des Moines area. One is in Johnson (I think) we went to him and he was good… ask Lisa Chirico where. Also there’s one somewhere around Ingersoll. Not sure. Usually holistic vets promote raw food and can give you good advise on getting your dogs going… OR you can do the research yourself (Like me). :o)
