Fruit flies… Be Gone!!!

With the abundance of fresh fruit available this time of year, I thought it would be great to share a frugal and natural fruit fly trap. For all of us that indulge in fruits every week, fruit flies can become a nuisance! I hate them and they seem to multiply within minutes!! Well, thanks to Lindsay from Passionate Homemaking, she has ridden my home of fruit flies! I couldn’t believe how well this homemade trap works. As long as you have a quart size mason jar and apple cider vinegar, you’re kitchen will be free of those nasty little flies! Thanks Lindsay!!

Fruit Fly Trap

  • 1 quart jar
  • A piece of paper rolled into a funnel
  • apple cider vinegar
  • small slice of fruit

Fill a quart jar with a 1/2 inch of apple cider vinegar and a small piece of fruit. Roll up your paper into a funnel shape and place the funnel into your jar. (Lindsay tapes the funnel in place.) Place the jar where your fruit is or where the majority of flies are flying around. The fruit flies will smell the fruit and climb inside. What’s crazy is once inside they won’t climb out again. When you have caught a good supply, place the entire jar in the freezer. I removed the funnel and quickly capped the jar before putting it into the freezer. After a short time the flies will die in the freezer and you can remove the jar and use it again without removing the old contents. Use repeatedly until your fruit flies are eliminated.

Seriously, it’s incredible how this works!

Great tip!! We don't have fruit flies right now because we don't keep any food waste inside, but I'm sure they'll be back with all the farmers market goodies I bring home. Have a great weekend, Diana!

    Thanks for the comments!

Muffy – I think the vinegar creates such a strong smell that they are attracted right away.

i tried it with red wine, and it worked like a charm. Just don't lift the paper out without something to catch the flies that didn't drown.
