Garden Update 7-7-09

My summer garden is doing fabulous! My tomato plants are blossoming, zucchinis and yellow squashes are blossoming, beans are starting to grow and flowering everywhere, and my peppers are growing beautifully!

My plot in the community garden is a different story. I’ve transplanted zucchini, yellow squash, and eggplant to that garden and will be taking out the fava beans this weekend and planting beans in its place. It has been such a wet season that nothing has been productive. I have harvested 5 fava beans. I count this as a victory since my plot holds so much water. To give you an idea, since early spring, I’ve only had to water my plot 3 times. Yeah! This wouldn’t be a huge problem if I had proper drainage, but my plot does not. So I just keep reminding myself, raised beds next year! I do plan on planting a fall/winter garden and I hope to get something out of that. I hope to plant Swiss chard, spinach, and peas to harvest for the winter. Oh I do keep forgetting, my beets and carrots are doing well in my backyard. I have them growing in large containers. So fun to watch! The chickens do keep getting at my beet greens though.

Chamomile, I have alot growing. I need to look up some recipes for homemade tea or tinctures.

Tomatillos, I can’t believe they’re actually producing!

My poor fava beans 🙁 At least they gave me a taste, lol!

So fun opening up the fava beans. The inside of their pod is fibrous.Garden Update | myhumblekitchen.com
My tomato plants. Can you believe these were planted only one week after my other girls in my summer plots. Too much water put them way behind! Hopefully I can still harvest from them in September to preserve for the winter.

Our gardens looks just alike. I am growing padrons and tomatillos too. I also have fava's growing. It has been raining here nonstop (I am in Massachusetts) so besides the one jalapeno pepper and a handful of yellow string beans, no veggies yet. My tomatillos are growing like crazy but just have the paper and nothing inside yet.

I love the garden pictures. Where are your weeds, or do they only grow in my garden? -Tien

I need to exercise too! I also very much like running, so much so that we purchased a treadmill …

I LOVE the beans you grew! Their shells are so interesting. I'm planning on artichokes as well, I am actually trying to plan my garden for next year already (strange). Is this your first year gardening?

You've probably seen my bed is awful! I can see why it was available. Did you amend your soil at all? You're tomatoes (at home) look great! Did you get any powdery mildew or early blight? It's a shame that are home gardens are doing so well and yet the one that is very public are so sad. Oh, are your Eggplants producing? Mine aren't too happy, the flea beetles don't help.

I love the pictures from your garden! I can't wait until we move out into a real house and i can start planting things. Until then I'll have to make do with one little basil plant. Oh…but I've got dreams!

As for the exercise…oh man! I need a little motivation too. i've had a gym member ship for 2 years that I have used a total of (I kid you not…) ZERO times!!! But i refuse to cancel it because i plan on making use of it…someday!

You guys are the best! Thanks for the comments 🙂

Rebecca from Chow and Chatter – I will post about it. I plan on running tomorrow morning and I'll let you know how that goes, lol!

Janis – Love your site! So glad that you visited 🙂

Phoo-D – I know! I love them also and so cool they are based right here in Iowa!

Tien – Oh there are weeds alright, I do spend quite a bit of time pulling them babies out 🙂

Donna – So glad you stopped by! This is actually my fifth gardening season, however, I've also had 2 kids in between, so it's been a struggle, LOL!! No powdery mildew or blight but the community garden seems to have ALOT of that!! My eggplants aren't producing yet but they are growing strong 🙂

Alejandra – Thanks for stopping by! I was rolling when I read your comment about having your membership for 2 years. My husband finally made me cancel mine as he was sick of donating to a lost cause, LOL!!

I just started running (i.e. jogging/walking!) again. Today was day 7 – only 21 days to form a habit. I have been getting up when hubby gets up and go run while he gets ready for work. If I am lucky, the girls are still sleeping when he leaves and then I get some quiet time in the Word. I figure I need to establish the habit while the weather is good so it will be so second nature that I won't let the harsh winter weather deter me.
