My hubby took this picture last night just as we got home from our final family Christmas of the season. My youngest, Ezekiel, crashed on the way home so he’s not pictured here. |
New Years resolutions. I have never been one to take resolutions seriously or really think about an entire year in a moments time. Over the holidays I’ve had people ask me, “so what’s in store for your blog this year?”
Nothing way too exciting, however, my main goal… my main resolution is to keep it simple. Keep my little space on the internet glorifying my Maker and in turn my husband and family. I’ll continue to live my life and share it with you and I’ll continue to develop friendships I have made and been blessed with here on the interwebz.
Specifically, I’m really excited to share a few things to come to Spain in Iowa in this New Year and one that I’d like your feedback on.
1. Gabusface on Spain in Iowa.
What in the heck is gabusface? Well, it’s my man! He is a character and has developed his blog on taking one picture of himself and putting it onto many people. Here’s an example….
No, I will not be putting these funny pictures on Spain in Iowa, you can see more of that over at his place. (If you want to follow him, he’d appreciate that 😉 However, crazy as it may sound, he has been wanting to share some of his recipes with us. Dad recipes.

This is a picture Gabe took and on facebook and called it, “A Little Bit of Dad in the Kitchen.” |
The more I thought about it, I thought it would be a great feature to add. My husband has been on a whirlwind adventure on real food as well and it would be great to show his perspective from a man’s point of view. He’s a country boy. A meat and potatoes kind of guy and I’m sure many men can relate.
He’s a real guys kind of guy. He’s an avid car racer, skateboarder and graphic designer by profession.
Gabe will be able to bring perspective to the real food movement. We shouldn’t be taking everything too seriously and he’ll let us know that. His first recipe that he will be sharing is, “Gabe’s Poptacular Popcorn!” He’s come a long way in real food. He now uses real butter, extra virgin olive oil and his secret ingredient that he will not compromise on…. Lawry’s salt.
I’m excited for him to share how much he values real food, especially cheese, and also some things that he will not let go of and that’s absolutely okay to 😉
We’re keeping it real, we’re keeping it simple!
2. I’m casting away any such and such challenge in such and such days and all diet fads!
I’m looking to Christ and his word to see what he says about our days of dieting, our get fit quick schemes, and such and such a day challenges. Really, my question to all of you and one I ask myself often is “when will we be content with who we are?”
Which leads me to another post….
3. Are you comparing yourself?
It’s usually in the New Year when days are slower and we have time to think about ourselves that I begin to question myself and my life. I will be sharing this post on Friday so that we can all reflect upon who we are and who we are living our lives for.
As a woman, we compare ourselves way too much. In every aspect of our lives. From real food, our blogs, homemaking, fitness, material possessions, homeschooling etc….
On Friday, I want to share with you what God says about comparing ourselves and what he has shown me in my own life.
4. Garden Frenzy!
It’s only January but I’m already looking forward to the Spring. This year my youngest sister and I are tearing up my older sisters entire backyard to expand our urban organic gardens!
Have you been receiving your seed catalogs?
Make sure to check out my organic gardening series, beginning with ordering seed catalogs.
What are your gardening plans for this year? Any new heirlooms you’ll be trying out?
5. Should I Change Spain in Iowa to…. Spain in Iowa’s, Traditional Kitchen. (La Cocina Casera)
I thought it might add a bit more detail about what I do here? I would appreciate your thoughts and opinions on that.
6. My boys
I just had to throw in a picture of my boys here. It’s really in this year that I want to make sure to be there, really be there for my boys. To take note of every little thing they do and to be the best mami that I possibly can. Oh how I love these little miracles.
7. Like me on Facebook
If you haven’t had a chance please like me on facebook. It’s really over there, that I’m able to respond to comments and communicate more freely. Also, I’m able to share more information and have been learning so much from all of you! I’ll also be doing some special giveaways on facebook!!
Follow the link below and like me on facebook!
So what’s in store for you this year? Leave me your comments, your feedback on any of the new things to come. If you haven’t said hello, please do, I’d love to meet you and grow this amazing community of kindred spirits.
God Bless you all.
Welcome Gabe!
How awesome! My hubby joined my blog as a contributor this month too. He's featured today (as are you) in the new contributors line-up.
Diana, I love all the new ideas for your blog and your family for 2011. And really featuring the hubby, like you said: a different perspective.
This "Gabe" fella sounds like a real heap of fun.
Big hugs diana! All the best in 2011 and big welcomes to your man! This is gonna be some silly dad stuff for sure! As for your blog name, I would leave the name as it is, but put in a secondary line–unless you are thinking of switching to self hosted, your ranking is gonna take a hit–you might be a little bit of spain in iowa and then under that in your title traditional cucina cooking…as for the rest, I am with you! Family, food and fun first—all the rest and all the stress can take a back seat~
Can't wait for Gabe. Your boys are so adorable! Here's to a wonderful 2011!
Great post Diana! I look forward to your husband's manly posts. I'm trying to talk my husband into eating more real food, but he's having a hard time getting past low-fat this and that… He did buy me Nourishing Traditions for Christmas, and I think I may be getting somewhere with him. 🙂
My goals for 2011 include: learning to cook more real food (getting Nourishing Traditions and Nourished Kitchen's meal plans are a step in the right direction). I want to add more fermented food and hope to acquire a taste for it. I also want to try my hand at cheesemaking!
On another note, I'm making some chicken stock next weekend with pastured chickens, and I'm going to make your chicken enchiladas with the chicken meat once the stock is done. I can't wait to try them!
Happy New Year!
I haven't really had time to put into words what I would like for my blog but I did write about what we want to do on our farm.

I love your 2011 goals Diana and I am excited to see Gabe's real food perspective on your blog…he looks like such an interesting guy! ps I melt whenever I see pics of your boys- they are beyond adorable 🙂
So cute. Happy new Year to you!
Your boys are adorable, and i love your comment on comparing yourself. . .so true!
Diana,
I hope I can stop by and visit sometime soon with my hubby and 2 kids. I feel such a kinship with you even though I've never met you. Maybe because I'm a spanish girl married to an american, or maybe because I follow Jesus too…whatever the case, I hope we can meet one day!
I think you should call your blog:
A Spanish Girl in Iowa
Tag line: Traditional Spanish cooking using real home grown, and nutritious food!
Hi Diana! Happiest of new years' wishes to you and your family! I love your blog and I just want to say thanks so much for what you do! Blessings and happiness to you always, and I hope you are all doing well. x0x0x0
Interesting that you put up the comparing yourself section. Just had a conversation with several girlfriends about that very topic. We women do struggle in that area. I know I do. Look forward to reading your post about that subject. Saw that you put it up today, but I'm a bit behind on my reading. 🙂
Like that you are adding Gabe to your blog. Look forward to seeing what he has to share. Todd and I have talked of him joining my blog at times too, although as of yet, time has not allowed it.
Oh, going to try your bean dish you shared on simple bites here in the next couple of days. Getting the ingredients tonight at the store.
