Monday’s with Mami – Chicharos Con Chorizo

chicharos_chorizo

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a Monday’s with Mami.  I’m more than excited to bring it back with one of my favorite simple meals that my grandfather used to make for my sisters and I.  Chicharos con Chorizo.  A stew of white beans and Spanish chorizo sausage.  I’ll probably hear from one of my readers that chicharo refers to peas, guisantes.  However, my family has and still does call these white beans chicharos.  I don’t know if it’s because they originally were from San Lucar de Barrameda, a beach town in the South of Spain and a term from there or that it’s a traditional word used by elders.  However, I stand by this word and will forever call this chicharos con chorizo, lol!  My grandfather used to make this for us in Spain because we loved it.  A meal suitable for any child!  I mean really, chorizo and beans – what’s not to like!  Pair this with a green salad, crusty bread, red wine and you’ll be in heaven.  So simple, So Spain!

Chicharos Con Chorizo

Ingredients:

  • 8oz Great Northern Beans, soaked overnight
  • 4 pack small palacios chorizo sausage
  • 1 green pepper sliced in half
  • 1 tomato
  • 1/2 white onion
  • 3-5 garlic cloves
  • 2 bay leaves
  • A good drizzle of Olive Oil (about 3-4 tbl)
  • 1 tsp Pimenton, Spanish Smoked Paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

I used my frozen peppers and tomato from last seasons harvest!

Method:

  1. In a large pot put the beans, chorizo sausage, green pepper, tomato, onion, garlic cloves, and 2 bay leaves.
  2. Cover with water 2 inches above the beans, sausage and vegetables.
  3. Mix in the olive oil, smoked paprika, salt and pepper.
  4. Bring to a boil.
  5. Lower the heat, cover and simmer for 1 1/2 – 2 hours or until the beans are tender.

So easy and so delicious.  Buen Provecho!

Hola, Diana. I just found your blog and have become a fan just by reading your recipe for bean soup with chorizo. I am looking forward to reading your older posts.

By the way, in my family we call chicharos a type of bean that is shaped like baby lima beans but are pink when fresh and almost red when mature and dry. Delicious!

Hi Diana! Yum, this looks so good..I love chorizo! Lately in the last few months I've eaten out at a couple of Mexican restaurants and had the Queso Fundido. Both versions I've had included chorizo in them. I am so obsessed with making this at home in a healthier version! It is really hard to find good, healthy chorizo from a sustainable source. I haven't been lucky yet. Do you know any where that it can be ordered from the Internet?

Also, I wanted to say thank you so much for your comments on my blog. I'm still building my reader base and have a lot of other things I plan to change and add on as time goes…I just lack the time to do it each and every day. But your comments mean so much to me and I am so glad to have found you on the Internet. You are so sweet and interesting, and inspirational. And I believe we have a lot in common too! Someday I'll tell you my crazy stories about my time as music promoter and event organizer in the local Gothic scene here in Boise..which thankfully I am no longer a part of. I still love the music and the clothes (my closet is still bursting with fun, crazy clothes)…but I had to depart because the drama and long hours were really taking its toll on me and my family. Thankfully God showed me the way! My head is on much more straight now.

Anyway, keep up the great work on here…I love what you are doing. I hope someday to have my act together as well as you do.

    Love and blessings to you.

    -Raine 🙂

I’m Cuban …born in Cuba raised in Miami. Your dish looks divine, however… “chícharos” are not white beans. Chícharos are peas …my mom made this dish all the time. Split pea soup with chorizo is a very popular dish among Cubans… but the white beans are looking mighty good and I think I will try this version next time I make it.

Ana, that’s great! In Sevilla, in the Southern part of Spain, we do call beans chicharos. It’s always fun to hear how words mean different things in different Spanish speaking countries. I would have never of thought to use peas. I’ll have to try that!

How would you recommend adjusting the time if I would like to cook this recipe in a crockpot? I am planning a dinner for 35 and making this in a crockpot would be very helpful!

Stephanie, I’ve made this often in the crockpot! Just put the soaked beans and all ingredients in the crock and set it on low for 8 hours. It works well!!
