Spring Planting in the Community Garden

Last Saturday was a work day at the Franklin Community Garden. Nehemiah and I got up early, gathered up our work tools and seeds and headed out to meet new neighbors and start our Spring Gardening. Praise the Lord that the rain held out allowing us to clean up our plots, till, compost, and sow. I'm into my fourth season at the Community Garden. My soil is nice and black as through the years I've layered compost, manure, and organic fertilizers. Not only have I noticed that my soil is richer, but ... continue reading...

My Big Fat Dog Boaz!

Boaz, My German Shepherd Dog

I've been feeling a real yearning lately to draw nearer to God. I've been so consumed lately with the excitement of spring and all the chores that come with it that I get wrapped up in my own little world forgetting what's truly important. Obviously, God was trying to tell me something and I am so grateful for Him. He reassured me that ... continue reading...

It was super fun to cruise down the aisles to see what they sell on their store shelves. One of the items I found was a box of organic quinoa, pronounced KEEN-WAH. Quinoa is a 100% whole grain and an excellent source of protein. Technically, it's not a grain but the seed of a leafy plant related to spinach. I used it to make a ... continue reading...

Spinach Lasagna

As I've been reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, I've been inspired to eat more local produce and in its season. My garden is nowhere near producing and the Des Moines Farmers' Market doesn't start for another 2 weeks so I called Picket Fence Creamery and sure enough they had fresh spinach from a local farmer calling my name. I had to pick up milk anyways so it was a treat knowing that they were going to hold their last bag of spinach just for me. I used it to make this ... continue reading...

My family just returned from a week long vacation in California. The Bacons, Baumans and Caraza's. It was great to be back! Where else can you visit the beach and the mountains in one week! We had soo much fun and were happy to visit many family members! (I heart cousins!!) My Tia Helen and Nino Nick had us in their home for the entire week. Bless their hearts. But hey, It's my Mexican side of the family, the more the merrier :) Right Tia ;) My Nino cooked us up huevos con chorizo and papas in ... continue reading...
